What does Heartgard Plus do?
Heartgard Plus prevents and controls heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis), roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), and hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma braziliense, Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Uncinaria stenocephala).
What are the active ingredients in Heartgard Plus and how do they work?
Heartgard Plus contains both ivermectin and pyrantel. Both these chemicals act on the worms nervous system and affect the way nerve impulses pass along it. This results in the paralysis of the parasite and ultimately its death.
How quickly does Heartgard Plus work?
Heartgard Plus starts acting as soon as it is swallowed, absorbed and enters the dog's circulation.
From what age can Heartgard Plus be used?
Heartgard Plus can be used in puppies from 6 weeks of age.
Does Heartgard Plus need to be given with food?
Heartgard Plus may be offered by hand or added to the food. It does not need to be given with food to be effective. Heartgard Plus should be given in a manner that encourages the dog to chew, rather than swallow without chewing. Chewables may be broken into pieces and fed to dogs that normally swallow treats whole.
How tasty is Heartgard Plus?
Heartgard Plus is flavoured with real beef and most dogs find them highly palatable.
Can Heartgard Plus be used in breeding, pregnant or lactating dogs?
Yes. When used as directed, Heartgard Plus has a wide safety margin in all breeds of dogs, including stud dogs, breeding bitches and puppies 6 weeks or older.
Can I switch from another heartworm medication to Heartgard Plus?
Yes. This is an easy process as you just continue with Heartgard Plus on your normal monthly regime.
Precautions
As ivermectin, the active ingredient in Heartgard Plus, may have some effects against adult heartworms, Heartgard Plus should be used with caution when treating active or working dogs with a diagnosed heartworm infection. Dogs should be tested by a veterinarian for heartworm infection before heartworm prevention is initiated.
