What is Comfortis Plus?

Comfortis Plus was formally known as Panoramis. In early 2017 the manufacturers of Panoramis changed its name to Comfortis Plus.

Comfortis Plus is indicated for monthly administration to puppies and dogs for the prevention of heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis); the treatment and prevention of flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis) infestations in dogs and the treatment and control of adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and whipworm (Trichuris vulpis).

What are the active ingredients in Comfortis Plus and how do they work?

Comfortis Plus contains two ingredients called spinosad and milbemycin in a chewable, beef-flavoured tablet. Spinosad is derived from a naturally-occurring soil microbe. It is an insect neurotoxin and works by interfering with the transmission of impulses along the insect nervous system. This causes paralysis of the insect and its ultimate death. Milbemycin is extracted from a particular species of bacteria and like spinosad affects the parasites' neurological system.

How often is Comfortis Plus administered?

To break the flea life cycle Panoramis is given orally once a month. Comfortis Plus should be administered with food for maximum effectiveness. Comfortis Plus is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and distributed around the body after oral administration.

From what age can Comfortis Plus be used?

Comfortis Plus is safe to use in puppies from 14 weeks of age and over 2.3kg in bodyweight.

How quickly does Comfortis Plus work?

Comfortis Plus has been demonstrated to start killing fleas within 30 minutes of oral administration and kills 100% of fleas within 4 hours starts killing fleas within 8 hours and at 12 hours after application 90% of fleas are dead. Importantly this speed of kill is maintained for a full month.

Is Comfortis Plus water fast?

As Comfortis Plus is an oral product, there is no restriction with regards to swimming or washing after treatment. The dog or cat can be treated while it is wet and can be exposed to water immediately after treatment. Additionally there is no requirement to exclude the pet from access to any furniture or home fittings. As the product is inside the dog it cannot damage any surfaces or other material in the home.

Can I use Comfortis Plus all year-round?

Fleas are often a year-round problem and so Comfortis Plus should be applied every 4 weeks throughout the year. Treatment with Comfortis Plus may begin at any time of the year.

Can I use Comfortis Plus in pregnant or lactating animals?

Seek veterinary advice regarding the use of Comfortis Plus in pregnant and lactating females as its safety has not been evaluated. In addition seek veterinary advice for its use in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The safe use of Comfortis Plus in breeding males has not been evaluated.

Can Comfortis Plus be used with other medications?

The concurrent use of Comfortis Plus with high "off-label" doses of ivermectin to treat such conditions as demodectic or sarcoptic mange has been associated with an increased risk of developing neurological signs typically associated with ivermectin toxicity. As such Comfortis Plus should not be administered concurrently with such medications and veterinary advice should be sought. There are no known issues with using Comfortis Plus in conjunction with topical tick treatments or collars, as well as gastrointestinal worm or heartworm treatments used as per label directions.

My pet has allergies. Can I till use Comfortis Plus?

Comfortis Plus contains beef flavouring made from a pork-based protein. If your pet has an allergy to pork, another alternative for flea treatment and prevention might need to be considered. Please discuss these options with your pet's veterinarian.

What side effects might occur with Comfortis Plus?

The most common adverse reaction reported is vomiting and this occurs most commonly within 48 hours of administration of the firs dose and decresing incidence with repeat doses. If vomiting occurs within an hour of administration, re-dose with another full dose. Other adverse reactions reported in decreasing order of frequency are: depresion/lethargy, decreased appetite, incoordination, diarrhoea, itching, trembling, excessive salivation and seizures. Following concomitant extra-label use of ivermectin with Comfortis Plus, some dogs have experienced the following clinical signs: trembling/twitching, salivation/drooling, seizures, ataxia, mydriasis, blindness and disorientation.
