What does Bravecto do?

Bravecto provides treatment and prevention of flea (Ctenocephalides felis) infestations for 3 months, treatment and control of paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) for 4 months and treatment and control of brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) for 8 weeks.

What is the active ingredient in Bravecto and how does it work?

Bravecto contains a chemical called fluralaner. Fluralaner acts by causing a dysfunction in special nervous system receptors of fleas and ticks causing them to become paralysed and ultimately die. These special nervous receptors are different in mammals and so Bravecto does not cause paralysis in these species.

How quickly does Bravecto work?

Bravecto provides effective control of fleas on dogs within 8 hours of administration and maintains persisent effectiveness against flea reinfestations for 3 months. It provides effective control of pre-existing infestations of paralysis tick within 24 hours of being given. During tick season daily searching for and removal of any ticks found is recommened.

From what age can Bravecto be used?

Bravecto should not be used in puppies less than 8 weeks of ago or weighing less than 2 kg.

Does Bravecto need to be given with food?

Bravecto should be given at or around the time of feeding with food to increase it absorbtion into the circulation. The dog should be observed to onfirm that the tablet has been swallowed.

How tasty is Bravecto?

Bravecto is a highly palatable, pork-flavoured chew taht is easy to administer. Studies show that more than 91.7% of dogs voluntarily accept Bravecto.

Does it matter if the Bravecto is swallowed whole and not chewed?

No. A study was conducted which revealed no differences between dogs which were pilled and dogs which were allowed to chew the tablet.

Can Bravecto be used in breeding/pregnant/lactating dogs?

Yes. Bravecto is approved for the use in breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs.

Bravecto is an oral product so there is no reason to stop touching a dog treated with Bravecto.

Can Bravecto be used all year-round?

Bravecto can and should be used all year-round to ensure pet dogs are protected against fleas throughout the year.

Can dead ticks still be found attached to treated dogs?

Yes. Due to the systemic nature of action of Bravecto, dead attached ticks can still be seen on animals following treatment. These ticks may appear partially engorged. Dead ticks can be easily removed as opposed to live ticks which take force to dislodge from the skin of dogs.

Is it necessary to use additional insecticides to control flea stages in the environment? How does Bravecto work to control flea life stages in the environment?

Bravecto provides 3 months flea efficacy, a time period that covers the entire flea life cycle. It is not necessary to use additional insecticides to control flea stages in the environment. Fleas which have fed on a Bravecto treated dog cannot produce a new flea generation, and due to the long duration of efficacy, the flea life stages in the environment are also eliminated over time. Juvenile life stages (eggs, larvae, pupae) which are present in the environment will mature to adult fleas. Once these fleas get on the treated dog to start feeding, they are also killed before they can lay eggs.

Why is Bravecto's duration of efficacy against brown dog tick shorter than for paralysis tick?

Different species have different sensitivities to fluralaner. In studies the paralysis tick demonstrated greter susceptibility to fluralaner than other tick species.

Is Bravecto effective against other dog parasites such as mosquitoes and intestinal worms?

No. Bravecto is approved for control of fleas, paralysis ticks and brown dog tick only.

Can Bravecto be given to cats?

Bravecto is not approved for use in cats.

Is it okay to give Bravecto to a dog that is taking other medications?

During clinical field testing, no interactions between Bravecto and routinely used medications was observed.

Can I use Bravecto to protect against fleas if I am not in a paralysis or brown dog tick area?

Yes. Bravecto provides extended protection against fleas with 3 months flea control follwoing a single tasty chew.
