What is Paragard?

Paragard is used for the treatment and control of roundworms (Toxocara catiToxascaris leonina), hookworm (Ancyclostoma tubaeforme), and adult tapeworms (Taenia sp., Dipylidium caninum) in cats.

What are the active ingredients in Paragard and how do they work?

Paragard contains praziquantel and oxibendazole. These ingredients work by interfering with the transmission of impulses along the parasites' nervous system. This causes paralysis of the parasite and its ultimate death.

How often is Paragard administered?

Paragard is administered orally. The frequency of admistration is dependent on the age of the kitten and what other parasite prevention products the kitten or cat is receiving. This is due to the fact that many products may already control several of the gastrointestinal worms that cats can be affected by.

As a general rule kittens should be wormed at 6, 8 and 12 weeks of age and then every 3 months.

From what age can Paragard be given?

Paragard is safe to use in kittens from 2 weeks of age.

How quickly does Paragard work?

Paragard starts working as soon as it is ingested. Worms, if present, may or may not appear in the droppings for up to 48 hours after treatment.

Is Paragard water fast?

As an oral medication that acts internally Paragard is not affected by washing, shampooing, swimming or contact with water.

Can I use Paragard all year-round?

Paragard should be administered all year-round to prevent gastrointestinal worms in cats.

Can Paragard be used on pregnant or lactating queens?

Paragard is safe to use in all cats including pregnant and lactating queens. Paragard should be given to queens prior to mating, to pregnant queens sometime in the last 10 days before queening and again 2 and 4 weeks after queening.

Can Paragard be used with other medications?

Paragard may and is recommended to be used in conjunction with other treatments such as flea, tick and heartworm prevention.

Additional Information

Worms often reinfect cats so it is necessary to treat the cat itself, reduce the environmental contamination by daily disposal of droppings and remove tapeworm intermediate hosts such as fleas.
