What is Comfortis?

Comfortis is indicated for the treatment, prevention and control of flea (Ctenocephalides felis) infestations in cats.

What is the active ingredient in Comfortis and how does it work?

Comfortis contains a chemical called spinosad in a chewable, beef-flavoured tablet. Spinosad is derived from a naturally-occurring soil microbe. It is an insect neurotoxin and works by interfering with the transmission of impulses along the insect nervous system. This causes paralysis of the insect and its ultimate death.

How often is Comfortis administered?

To break the flea life cycle Comfortis is given orally once a month. Comfortis should be administered with food for maximum effectiveness. In cats Comfortis is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and distributed around the body after oral administration.

From what age can Comfortis be used?

Comfortis is safe to use in kittens from 14 weeks of age.

How quickly does Comfortis work?

Comfortis has been demonstrated to start killing fleas within 30 minutes of oral administration and kills 100% of fleas within 4 hours starts killing fleas within 8 hours and at 12 hours after application 90% of fleas are dead. Importantly this speed of kill is maintained for a full month. 

Is Comfortis water fast?

As Comfortis is an oral product, there is no restriction with regards to swimming or washing after treatment. The cat can be treated while it is wet and can be exposed to water immediately after treatment. Additionally there is no requirement to exclude the pet from access to any furniture or home fittings. As the product is inside the cat it cannot damage any surfaces or other material in the home.

Can I use Comfortis all year-round?

Fleas are often a year-round problem and so Comfortis should be applied every 4 weeks throughout the year. Treatment with Comfortis may begin at any time of the year.  

Can I use Comfortis in pregnant or lactating animals? 

Seek veterinary advice regarding the use of Comfortis in pregnant and lactating females as its safety has not been evaluated. The safe use of Comfortis in breeding males has not been evaluated. 

Can Comforis be used with other medications? 

The concurrent use of Comfortis with high "off-label" doses of ivermectin to treat such conditions as demodectic or sarcoptic mange has been associated with an increased risk of developing neurological signs typically associated with ivermectin toxicity. As such Comfortis should not be administered concurrently with such medications and veterinary advice should be sought. There are no known issues with using Comfortis in conjunction with topical tick treatments or collars, as well as gastrointestinal worm or heartworm treatments used as per label directions. 

My pet has allergies. Can I till use Comfortis? 

Comfortis contains beef flavouring made from a pork-based protein. If your pet has an allergy to pork, another alternative for flea treatment and prevention might need to be considered. Please discuss these options with your pet's veterinarian. 

What side effects might occur with Comfortis? 

As with any medication, sometimes side effects can occur.

For cats: In some cases, cats vomited after receiving Comfortis. If vomiting occurs within one hour of administration, redose with another full dose. Additional adverse reactions observed in studies were lethargy, decreased appetite, weight loss, and diarrhoea. Use with caution with concomitant extra label use of ivermectin.
