What is Advocate?
In kittens and cats, Advocate is indicated for the treatment and prevention of fleas (Ctenocephalides sp.) and the prevention of heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). It is also indicated for the treatment and control of roundworms (Toxocara catis, Toxascarsi leonina), hookworms (Ancylostoma tubaeforme, Ancylostoma braziliense, Uncinaria stenocephala), whipworm (Trichuris vulpis), ear mites (Otodectes cynotis) and lungworm (Aelurostrongylus abstrusus).
What are the active ingredients in Advocate and how do they work?
Advocate contains imidacloprid and moxidectin. Both imidacloprid and moxidectin are parasite neurotoxins and work by interfering with the transmission of impulses along the parasites' nervous system. This causes paralysis of the parasite and its ultimate death.
How often is Advocate applied?
To break the flea life cycle Advocate is applied directly to the skin every 4 weeks. By doing this Advocate ensures that fleas that jump onto your pet will stop feeding, become paralysed and die. In addition Advocate controls the immature stages of the flea's life cycle in the environment and so prevents reinfestation. To prevent heartworm infection Advocate should also be applied monthly.
From what age can Advocate be used?
Advocate is safe to use in kittens from 9 weeks of age. It is not necessary to treat unweaned kittens as treatment of the mother protects the litter while in contact. Treat the mother until weaning, then treat the individual kittens. To treat kittens between weaning age and 9 weeks use Advantage.
How quickly does Advocate work?
Advocate stops fleas biting within 3 to 5 minutes and kills both adult fleas and larvae within 20 minutes. Fleas are not required to bite the animal to receive a lethal dose.
Is Advocate water fast?
Advocate remains effective following shampooing with a soap-free shampoo, swimming or exposure to rain. Bathing your pet is not required prior to applying Advocate however your pet should not be allowed to swim or be shampooed within 48 hours after treatment. Avoid applying Advocate while the animal is wet.
Can Advocate be used on pets with itchy skin?
Advocate can be used in the management of pets with very itchy and inflammed skin due to flea bites - also known as flea allergy dermatitis.
Can I use Advocate all year-round?
Fleas and heartworm are a year-round problem and so Advocate should be applied every 4 weeks throughout the year.
Can Advocate be used on pregnant or lactating animals?
Advocate is safe for use on pregnant and lactating animals.
